We're HERE!!!

Wednesday, January 11, 2023

We’re here!  Cairo!  Land of the pyramids!  Whew!  What a day!  Actually, it feels like TWO days!  We left Tucson for the Phoenix Airport at 9 am on Tuesday morning, and we arrived here at the hotel around noon Phoenix time on Wednesday.  Now granted, Tucson isn’t LAX, and we did have three legs – Phoenix to Denver, Denver to Frankfurt and then Frankfurt to Cairo.  Flight durations were 2 hours, 10 hours and 4 hours, respectively.  Our Lufthansa flight long leg to Frankfurt was on an Airbus 300 – and truly, we haven’t been squeezed that tightly together since we went on Northwest to Hawaii from LAX about 30 years ago!  Never again!  I quite literally had a guy in my lap for most of the flight – he even managed to have a “seat back” problem, and when he reached around to pull his seat upright so that he could actually eat, he managed to overturn my glass of sparkling water all over me!  Ugh, as I say.  Also, there wasn’t much movie variety to choose to from, like most of the American carriers – unless I wanted movies in other languages, which honestly, I didn’t.  And, finally, the overhead bins are much too small to handle the carry-on luggage people use these days.  Oh well!  Fortunately, all the flights ran more or less on schedule, and we were able to have plenty of connecting time, but not too much that it was boring.  Our return flight long-leg (Frankfurt to Denver) will be on United, so I believe that will be more comfortable!  Hopefully, and fingers crossed!

We were going carry-on, and everything arrived safely.  Then, something screwy about our Uber app, and we couldn’t contact them from the Cairo airport… will figure that out tomorrow!   So, ended up getting a taxi from the airport, but as the price was very reasonable – about 45 minute drive, and it was just about $18.00.  Can’t complain at that!  The hotel wanted to charge us $80 to pick us up!  No thank you!

Our "home" for the next six days!

Cindy, Katy, Hil - MY tub!!!

Very comfy bed!

Large balcony with furniture and table!

The Nile!!!!  Looks lovely at night!

Veggie pizzas -- should have just split one!

Not sure if you can see the hose ... but it's there!

They are still renovating some of the lobby areas of the hotel, but inside, the hotel is really stunning.  And again, thank you SO much Hilary for recommending that we stick with one hotel chain to build up loyalty points; it really pays off.  We were upgraded to the 20th floor and a stunning view of the Nile; check-in through the Executive Lounge.  Truly the way to go!  Hopefully my photos will post so you can see! (The final photo – R says he can’t wait to see how I caption it! – is a hand-held hose next to the toilet.  I mean, it is what it is … something that I’d probably hurt myself with….)  As it is, it’s now about 10 pm and we’ve just ordered vegetarian pizzas via room service for dinner – and then I’m heading to BED!  SOOOOO tired!  But, we’re here!  More later!

Much love,

m

  1. Nice to see you back on the road! We're expecting a "Lady in the Tub" photo in addition to the usual "Lady drinking Wine!" Possibly could you enlarge the type just a tiny bit?
    Thanks!! xxx
